If you are looking for fun family thing to do over Spring Break that doesn’t take you away from home but can bring connection to your family, you’ve come to the right place. The DAILY LEGO CHALLENGE!!!
It’s a simple idea. Each day there is a theme to follow and guide participants. Anyone who wants to build works on an idea in keeping with the motif of the day. Encourage them to think through what they like about the theme and reproduce that idea as best they can. If they struggle, they can google “lego (insert idea here)” and they will find all sorts of images to draw inspiration from (parental supervision suggested). Choose a time of day for it to be finished. Gather together and present your builds to one another and then vote for the family favorite! Voting for your own creation is not allowed. (Voting is optional if you are not the competitive type… we are the competitive type, so we vote. Ha!).
It is great fun to see what everyone creates. Look for opportunities to praise original thinking, creativity, and presentation. “Builder’s block” (akin to “writer’s block”) can be hard to overcome so praise persistence through the creative process. Praise any small step you see in this area. Tenacity in imagination is crucial in so many areas of life.
Here are some suggested themes and schedule (all ideas from our son at age 7):
Day 1: We Built a Zoo
Day 2: Spring has Sprung
Day 3: Just Buildings
Day 4: Build Your Own Pizza
Day 5: Space Race
The sky’s the limit with this creative family fun. Enjoy building and enjoy each other’s creations! Here are some of our challenge results from year’s past!
